Echocardiogram Q & A

What should I know about an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is a diagnostic imaging test that uses ultrasound technology to capture moving pictures of your heart. The purpose of the test is to evaluate and assess the structure and function of the heart.

It’s a noninvasive test used to diagnose heart conditions.

The ultrasound technician uses a transducer during the test to send sound waves into your body. The sound waves bounce off your organs and back to the transducer, which then goes to a computer that translates the sound into moving images.

I have concerns about heart disease. Do I need an echocardiogram?

Your provider at Tyler Internal Medicine Associates P.A. determines if you need an echocardiogram after an evaluation. The internal medicine providers may request the test if they have concerns about heart conditions such as:

  • Coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • Heart failure
  • Cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart)
  • Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • Heart valvular disease
  • Heart abnormality
  • Tumor
  • Pericarditis (inflammation of the pericardium)
  • Aneurysm

They may order an echocardiogram if you’re experiencing symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath and they’re unable to get a conclusive diagnosis from other diagnostic tests.

What does an echocardiogram feel like?

There are different types of echocardiograms. However, the imaging test is relatively painless.

Types of echocardiograms include:

Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE)

TTE is the standard echocardiogram. For this test, the technician places the transducer on your chest to capture moving images of your heart.

Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE)

During a TEE, the provider uses a special transducer that goes down your esophagus to get clearer images of your heart and aorta (major artery in the heart).

Stress echocardiogram

A stress echocardiogram combines a stress test with ultrasound imaging to find heart conditions that are easier to spot when the heart is pumping harder.

Doppler ultrasound

Tyler Internal Medicine Associates P.A. may use a Doppler ultrasound during your echocardiogram to evaluate the movement of blood through the heart.
