What are mammograms?

Mammograms are X-ray images of the breast. They’re used to screen for breast cancer and evaluate the breast tissue when you have concerning symptoms like a lump. 

Regular mammograms help health care providers find breast cancer during the early stages when it's more responsive to treatment, increasing your chances of a full recovery.

When should I start having mammograms?

The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends women start regular mammograms at age 50 and repeat the screening test every two years until age 75. However, you can start mammograms at age 40 or sooner if you have concerns about breast cancer or a family history of breast cancer. 

I heard mammograms are painful. What happens during the test?

During a mammogram, the X-ray technician compresses your breast between two plates to flatten out the tissue to get the best images. Many women find mammograms uncomfortable, but the test is quick.

The amount of discomfort you feel may depend on the size of your breasts and the pressure needed to get the best image. The X-ray technician needs front and side views of both breasts, so they take several images of each breast.

You can minimize discomfort during a mammogram by scheduling the screening test at a time when your breasts are less sensitive, usually the week after your period.

Don’t wear deodorant or perfume on the day of your mammogram because the residue may show up as white spots on the X-ray, and you may need to repeat the screening test.

When can I expect results from a mammogram?
